AlpackaRaft Forager — Complete Guide to Alpacka’s Largest Packraft

アルパカラフト

🇯🇵 日本語 | 🇺🇸 English

The biggest, highest-capacity, most versatile boat in the AlpackaRaft lineup.

That’s the Forager.

“I want a two-person packraft.” “I need to haul big game.” “I want the whole family in one boat.” “I want to drift-fish backcountry rivers.” — If you’re looking for a single packraft that can cover all of these, the Forager is the only current AlpackaRaft model that delivers.

What Is the Forager?

The Forager is AlpackaRaft’s largest and highest-capacity packraft. At 315cm long and 109cm wide, its oversized hull combines a self-bailing floor with an XL Cargo Fly system to cover everything from whitewater to big game hunting.

And yet, it packs down to a kit weight of approximately 6.3kg — light enough for two people to share the carry.

Big. But backpackable. That combination is what makes the Forager unlike anything else in the packraft category.

Paddling Styles

The Forager supports two distinct paddling configurations.

Single Paddler — Kayak Style

One paddler sits at the stern with a double-blade kayak paddle. The bow space is used for passengers, pets, or gear. This is the standard configuration for solo operation, hunting, and fishing.

Two Paddlers — Canoe Style (R2)

Two paddlers sit fore and aft, each using a single-blade canoe paddle. This R2 configuration opens up serious whitewater — classic western runs, the Middle Fork of the Salmon, and similar technical routes become accessible with two experienced paddlers.

Recommended paddle: The Aqua Bound Shred Apart — co-developed with AlpackaRaft — converts between a double-blade and two single-blade paddles, making it the ideal match for the Forager’s two styles.

Note: The Passenger Platform Seat for the front paddler is sold separately.

Use Cases

Family and Flatwater

The Forager is AlpackaRaft’s most popular family packraft. One paddler at the stern, a second adult on the passenger seat, with kids and a dog loaded in front — this configuration works. The self-bailing floor keeps the cockpit from flooding even when waves come in.

If you want the whole family in one boat, the Forager is the only option in the lineup.

Hunting

The Forager is AlpackaRaft’s largest and most capable hunting packraft.

It’s the only model in the lineup that can reasonably transport a whole moose in a single load. For elk, caribou, deer, and bighorn sheep, the Forager carries game comfortably with room for gear. It also works as a layout blind for waterfowl hunting with a dog and decoys.

In Hokkaido, practical applications include Ezo deer and brown bear retrieval — where river and lake access can replace the need to pack heavy game out on foot.

Fishing

The Forager works well as a mini drift boat. One paddler operates from the stern while the angler in the bow focuses on casting. It handles lightwater and occasional riffles without issue.

For two adults focused purely on flatwater fly fishing, the Rendezvous — with its elevated seating and high casting position — is the better match. But for mixed use that includes occasional whitewater or hunting, the Forager covers both.

Whitewater

The Forager is the only multi-person AlpackaRaft suitable for whitewater. With two experienced paddlers running the Shred Apart in canoe mode, the Forager handles Class III–IV water on both smaller rivers and larger volume runs.

Running whitewater with a heavy load is a genuine challenge. Flatwater practice with a full load before committing to moving water is strongly recommended.

Backcountry and Expedition

Fly-in Alaska trips, multi-week float hunts, traverse-style packraft expeditions combining hiking and paddling — the Forager handles all of it. Two people can split the carry on approach, and the XL Cargo Fly takes everything you need for weeks in the field.

The Forager and Ranger share the same design DNA — one is the scaled-up version of the other. If you need two-person capacity or moose-size hauling, choose the Forager. If solo operation and packability are the priority, choose the Ranger.

The Forager is the all-rounder. The Rendezvous is purpose-built for flatwater fishing and comfortable two-adult touring. If your use involves whitewater or hunting, the choice is clear.

Cargo Fly and XL Loading System

The Forager’s XL Cargo Fly uses a TIZIP airtight zipper at the stern to provide access to the interior of the hull tube — allowing gear to be stored inside the boat rather than on top of it.

This changes how loading affects performance:

  • Waterproofing: Gear stored inside stays dry regardless of conditions
  • Lower center of gravity: Internal loading brings weight down into the hull, improving stability
  • Reduced wind resistance: Less exposed gear means better tracking and less fatigue on flatwater

The optional Inner Dry Bag (sold separately) clips to both sides of the tube interior via side-release buckles, providing organized, balanced weight distribution. It also functions as a secondary air chamber — if the tube is punctured, the dry bag helps maintain buoyancy and makes reaching shore easier.

Who It’s Right For

  • Families who want everyone — two adults, kids, and a dog — in one boat
  • Hunters pursuing large game who need maximum hauling capacity
  • Paddlers who want two-person whitewater capability
  • Anglers who want a packraft-scale drift boat for backcountry fishing
  • Expedition paddlers planning multi-week remote trips
  • Anyone who needs to move serious weight by water

Who Should Look Elsewhere

  • Solo paddlers who want a lighter, more maneuverable boat → Ranger, Mule, or Caribou
  • Paddlers who prioritize minimum weight above all else → 6.3kg is light for a boat this size, but heavier than any solo model
  • Two adults focused purely on flatwater fishing and touring → Rendezvous offers more comfort for that specific use
