When considering the Mule, two models consistently appear for comparison: the Alpacka Raft Caribou and the Alpacka Raft Ranger. All three are large-volume packrafts with serious load capacity. They’re not interchangeable.
Mule vs Caribou
The Caribou is a lightweight, pared-down expedition model. It prioritizes packability and minimal kit for mountain-and-river traverses where every gram and liter counts.
The core difference between Mule and Caribou is one of load philosophy and durability approach:
| Mule | Caribou | |
|---|---|---|
| Load capacity | Very high | High |
| Durability | Higher (420d option available) | Lightweight focus (LW210d and STD210d) |
| Hunting suitability | Excellent | Good |
| Dog + heavy gear | Ample margin | Requires planning |
Mountain expedition with minimal kit → Caribou. Serious carrying — gear, game, heavy loads → Mule.
The Caribou is leaner by design. The Mule is built around the premise that you will carry more, and that not doing so isn’t an option.
Mule vs Ranger
The Ranger takes a different philosophy entirely: it’s optimized for river comfort above all else. Features include an exceptionally wide interior (149.8 cm cockpit length), a full-length self-bailing floor, capacity for a dog or child forward, and a paddling experience focused on relaxed multi-day river travel.
The three key differences:
River-centric vs land-and-river: The Ranger is built around the assumption that you arrive by vehicle and paddle from there. The Mule is built around the assumption that you carry the boat into position, paddle, and carry it back out. Both are capable river boats — but only one is designed to be practical when the approach is on foot.
Load philosophy: The Ranger loads wide and open — its spacious cockpit can accommodate large items, pets, and children in front. The Mule loads compactly, with better packability for overland movement after the water section ends.
Weight: The Ranger weighs approximately 5.6 kg. The Mule is lighter depending on configuration. On long portages or backcountry approaches, that difference is felt in the body.
Which to Choose
River comfort priority, vehicle-based trips, dogs or children on board → Ranger
Lightweight alpine expedition, minimal kit → Caribou
Hunting, heavy loads, backcountry with portage sections → Mule
Summary
The Ranger is river luxury. The Caribou is a lightweight expedition tool. The Mule is a carry-capable backcountry boat with high load headroom.
The Mule isn’t a universal solution. For paddlers whose trips require carrying a serious load across terrain to reach the water — and who need the boat to handle what they bring back — it’s the right answer.
