Basic Specs
Length: ~218 cm / Width: ~86 cm / Weight: ~1.6 kg (LW version) / Structure: open deck only
The Scout is a single-size model. There’s no size selection to make — instead, the relevant question is whether your build and paddling style are a compatible match.
Recommended Weight
Official guidance: up to approximately 90 kg (recommended), with up to approximately 110 kg possible on flatwater.
In practice: up to 90 kg — comfortable. 90–100 kg — workable on flatwater. Over 100 kg — buoyancy margin decreases noticeably. On moving water, staying within the recommended weight range is the safer approach.
Height and Fit by Build
Up to 165 cm: Plenty of cockpit room. Natural knee angle. Comfortable and easy to handle.
165–175 cm: Standard fit. Good balance overall.
175–183 cm: Slightly snug. Knees tend to sit further forward.
183 cm+: May feel cramped, especially on longer sessions. For taller paddlers, the Caribou may offer a more comfortable cockpit.
The Scout is a compact boat — fit is generally better for average to smaller builds.
How Loading Affects Fit and Trim
Like most packrafts, gear is often stowed at the bow. The Scout follows this general pattern, but trim shifts depending on placement:
Gear at the stern: center of gravity shifts back; bow rides higher; straight-line tracking suffers.
Gear at the bow: center of gravity shifts forward; stern rides higher; tracking again suffers.
The ideal load is a small pack that fits at the feet or within the cockpit footprint. Heavy or bulky loads noticeably change the paddling character. For trips requiring significant gear, the Caribou is the better platform.
Buoyancy Characteristics
The Scout has a moderate hull volume optimized for calm water with light loads. It’s designed for “paddler plus small kit” as the performance baseline. For paddlers seeking more buoyancy margin — particularly those over 90 kg or carrying meaningful loads — larger models provide more reserve.
Who It Fits Best
The Scout is a strong match for: paddlers under approximately 80 kg; paddlers up to around 175 cm tall; primarily flatwater use; ultralight travel approach.
Pre-Purchase Self-Check
Before ordering, confirm: Is your weight under 90 kg? Is your primary use flatwater or lakes? Will your load stay minimal? Are you not planning extended distance touring?
The more of these that apply, the better suited the Scout is for you.
Summary
The Scout is one size, but body type and intended use determine whether it’s the right fit. Smaller-to-average build, flatwater focus, and minimal load are where the Scout operates at its best. For anything beyond that, other Alpacka models are more appropriate.
