The Refuge is a lightweight whitewater packraft focused on agility and technical performance. Designed for Class II–III paddling, it delivers maneuverability in technical rivers — the balance point between the Caribou’s versatility and the Gnarwhal’s dedicated whitewater capability.

The Refuge has been removed from Alpacka’s standard lineup as of 2026. It is now available exclusively through the Custom Lab as a made-to-order model.
What this means in practice: no inventory stock; base price with fabric and color options added on top; longer lead time than standard models; built to individual order at Alpacka’s Mancos, Colorado workshop.

What Is the Custom Lab?
The Custom Lab is Alpacka’s small-batch, made-to-order production line — cut and built individually from specified materials at the Colorado factory. Unlike mass-production models, it’s designed for paddlers with a clear purpose, specific field in mind, and defined paddling style. The tradeoff is lead time and price premium over standard stock models.
Fabric Options
LW 210d: Lighter weight, better portability. For technical river use where agility and packability are the priorities.
Standard 210d: More durable. Better suited for regular hull contact on rocky rivers. More peace of mind for demanding use.
Given the Refuge’s whitewater orientation, fabric selection should match the intended field — LW for light-weight technical runs, Standard for rockier river environments.

Who It Suits
The Refuge is a strong fit for paddlers who are focused on lighter kit, primarily paddle Class II–III technical rivers, want tight maneuverability, and are intentionally choosing a less common model.
It’s not suited for paddlers who need the boat immediately, are working within a tight budget, or are looking for a general-purpose first packraft.
The Refuge Is a Model for Paddlers Who Know What They Want
Removing it from the standard lineup has made the Refuge even more of a specialist choice. For paddlers who know their field, their style, and their reason for wanting it, the Custom Lab process is a natural fit. For paddlers who are still exploring, other models serve better.
