Using a packraft for hunting.
In North America, this is an established practice — retrieving harvested animals by water rather than carrying them out on foot. Float in, pack out. The packraft handles the approach and the retrieval. That’s the core value proposition.
Within the AlpackaRaft lineup, the Forager is the model built most specifically around this use. This article explains what the Forager can actually do in a hunting context, what it does better than any other packraft in the lineup, and where its limits are.
Why Hunters Use Packrafts
The hardest part of backcountry hunting is often the retrieve.
An adult elk can weigh 300–450kg. A moose can exceed 500kg. Carrying that weight out of steep, remote terrain on foot pushes past what’s physically practical. But if there’s a river or lake nearby, the equation changes.
A packraft loaded with game and floated downstream covers ground that would take multiple grueling days on foot. And because packrafts pack down small and light, they don’t add meaningful weight to the approach. You hike in with it on your back, and float out with the harvest.
“Walk in, paddle out.” That’s the packraft hunting model.
What Makes the Forager the Right Choice for Hunting
1. Highest load capacity in the AlpackaRaft lineup
The Forager carries more than any other AlpackaRaft model. Optimum performance with up to approximately 90kg in the Cargo Fly plus two paddlers, with a maximum of approximately 200kg depending on conditions and experience. The theoretical flatwater maximum is approximately 454kg.
That capacity is what makes large game retrieval genuinely practical rather than marginal.
2. The only model that can transport a whole moose in a single load
This is the most specific and important distinction. The Forager is the only packraft in the AlpackaRaft lineup capable of carrying a whole moose in one load. Every other model requires splitting the animal between multiple boats or multiple trips.
If moose hunting is the goal, the Forager is the only option.
3. Self-bailing floor
When you’re floating heavy game out of remote terrain, you’re often dealing with rivers that have current, riffles, and occasional whitewater. The Forager’s self-bailing floor automatically drains water that enters the cockpit — maintaining stability and safety even with a heavy, unbalanced load.
The Forager can handle Class III–IV whitewater, which means it keeps a river exit viable even when conditions aren’t perfect.
4. XL Cargo Fly
The Forager’s XL Cargo Fly uses a TIZIP airtight zipper to allow gear storage inside the hull tube itself. For hunting, the practical application is straightforward: personal gear (tent, food, cooking equipment) goes inside the Cargo Fly, game goes on the deck. Keeping the heavy load inside the tube lowers the center of gravity and improves stability with a full load.
5. Splittable carry weight for two-person approaches
At approximately 6.3kg kit weight, the Forager can be split between two people on approach. The boat rolls down compactly. For a two-person hunting team, one person carries the packraft while the other carries other gear — the boat doesn’t dominate the pack.
Load Simulation by Game Animal
Reference values based on AlpackaRaft official guidelines.
| Game animal | Forager suitability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Moose | ◎ (only model) | Full animal in a single load |
| Elk | ◎ | Comfortable margin |
| Caribou | ◎ | Comfortable margin |
| Bighorn sheep | ◎ | Comfortable margin |
| Deer (including Ezo deer) | ◎ | Can carry animal + full personal gear simultaneously |
| Waterfowl | ◎ | Works as a layout blind with dog and decoys |
Official hunting capacity guidelines
- Hunter + approx. 45kg personal gear + approx. 181kg animal weight
- Additional animal weight up to approx. 181kg depending on conditions
- Flatwater theoretical maximum: approx. 454kg
Recommended Setup
Solo configuration (recommended for hunting)
AlpackaRaft recommends the solo configuration for hunting use. One paddler at the stern operates with a double-blade kayak paddle. The bow space is used for game. Personal gear goes in the Cargo Fly.
Paddle
The Aqua Bound Shred Apart — co-developed with AlpackaRaft — converts between a double-blade and two single-blade paddles. For heavy-load solo paddling, the double-blade configuration provides better control and stability.
Safety gear
Paddling with a heavy, loaded boat on moving water is harder than normal paddling. Difficulty increases with load weight and current speed.
PFD, helmet, throw bag, and river knife are non-negotiable. Scout unfamiliar sections before committing. Choose river sections that match your actual skill level — not your optimistic estimate of it. When in doubt, portage.
Applicability in Japan — Hokkaido Context
In Japan, the primary large game candidates for this kind of retrieval are Ezo deer (Hokkaido sika deer) and brown bear.
Ezo deer: Many hunting areas in Hokkaido are in mountain terrain adjacent to rivers. For hunters who find steep-terrain retrieval a physical challenge, waterway retrieval is a meaningful alternative. Adult Ezo deer weigh approximately 80–150kg — well within Forager capacity with room for personal gear.
Brown bear: Adult brown bear in Hokkaido can weigh 150–300kg or more. The Forager’s load capacity covers this range, but river retrieval with a heavy bear requires solid paddling experience and careful safety management.
Important: Hunting in Japan is regulated under the Wildlife Protection and Hunting Management Act. Before using waterways for retrieval, confirm applicable local regulations and rules for the specific area.
Who the Forager Is Right For — and Who Should Look Elsewhere
Forager — right for you if:
- You want to use river or lake access for game retrieval
- You’re hunting moose, elk, or other large game
- You’re hunting with a partner and want to split the carry
- You need maximum load capacity without compromise
- The terrain includes waterways that could serve as exit routes
Consider other models if:
- Long backcountry approaches on foot are the primary challenge, and boat weight is the priority → Ranger (lighter, more packable)
- Mid-size game (deer, caribou) is the target and a more compact boat is sufficient → Ranger
- Fishing rather than hunting is the main purpose → Rendezvous
Summary
The Forager sits at the top of AlpackaRaft’s hunting lineup across three dimensions: load capacity, game size compatibility, and whitewater handling. It’s the only model in the lineup capable of moose retrieval in a single load.
For hunters who think of rivers and lakes as exit routes rather than obstacles, the Forager is a rational piece of equipment — not an exotic one.
Large game, heavy loads, rivers that aren’t always easy. If all three apply, the Forager is the answer.
