For most packrafting, a roll-top dry bag inside the Cargo Fly is the right answer. But there are two situations where a zipper-style bag becomes the better choice: when you want to add hull rigidity in big or high water, and when you’re paddling rivers that require multiple air chambers.
The AlpackaRaft Cargo Fly Zipper-Style Inner Dry Bag is designed for both. Sold as a set of two — one for each side of the tube — for balanced weight distribution.
Key Features
TRU® Zip airtight zipper
NiteIze’s TRU® Zip provides a reliable waterproof seal with a smoother, easier open-and-close action than a standard T-Zip. Better protection and faster access than a roll-top when conditions require both.
Built-in inflation tube — functions as a secondary air chamber
Each dry bag includes an inflation tube. Inflated, it becomes an independent air chamber, satisfying multiple air chamber permit requirements on rivers like the Grand Canyon or the Middle Fork of the Salmon. It also provides supplemental buoyancy if the main Cargo Fly tube is punctured.
Quick-release buckle attachment to tube interior
Clips to the inside of the packraft tube via quick-release buckle (note: some older models may not have mounting clips). Clipping both bags side by side enables even left-right weight distribution, improving hull stability and tracking.

Roll-top is sufficient for: Standard packrafting, day trips, and multi-day trips on normal-difficulty rivers.
Zipper-style is the right choice for: Big or high water where added hull rigidity matters, rivers with multi-chamber permit requirements, or extended expeditions where you want one set for personal gear and one for food and group supplies.
Packing Tips
Distribute weight evenly left to right. An unbalanced load causes the boat to lean and reduces paddling efficiency over distance.
Protect hard items (pots, stove) with clothing and position them toward the inside and upper portion of the tube. This reduces the risk of abrasion damage from rocks in shallow sections.
Place heavier items lower in the tube to lower the center of gravity and improve stability.
Who It’s Right For
- Paddlers running big or high water who want added hull rigidity from the Cargo Fly
- Anyone paddling rivers with multi-chamber permit requirements (Grand Canyon, Middle Fork of the Salmon, etc.)
- Expedition paddlers who want to run one set for personal gear and a second set for food and group gear
- Paddlers who want reliable waterproofing and organized access from their Cargo Fly
