“Packraft + α” — This experience completely sold me on the incredible mobility of snow hiking (ski shoes). Whether carrying them on your back or wearing them on your feet, they make the transition from a short approach to the river entry incredibly smooth. I’ve rediscovered just how perfectly they complement packrafting.
For this trip, I joined a scouting session for a Niseko Ukka tour. Since it was a day-trip packrafting excursion, I kept my gear as simple as possible. Combining the packraft with snow hiking gear for a downriver run creates a seamless line between water and snow—a setup that never fails to excite me, no matter how many times I experience it.
Even when the water levels are low due to a lingering cold snap, the versatility of having “skis” attached to the raft allows for a unique style of exploration that transcends the seasons.
