Clean, Drain, Dry — Boat Care That Protects Our Waters

メンテナンス

🇯🇵 日本語 | 🇺🇸 English

Alpacka Raft’s blog laid out the basic routine for keeping invasive species from spreading: clean, drain, dry. Microscopic hitchhikers like dreissenid mussels can cling to a boat or gear, get carried into a different watershed, and cause serious environmental damage.

This isn’t really about gear maintenance — it’s about consideration for the next river you paddle. It’s unglamorous, but the actual environmental stewardship a packrafter can offer often comes down to exactly this kind of small, repeated habit.

Clean

When you get off the water, remove any mud, sand, or plant matter from your boat and gear.

Drain

Drain any standing water out of your packraft and gear. Use a towel or sponge to soak up water hiding in the nooks and crannies.

Dry

Let the sun finish the job, drying everything completely so there’s no environment left for microorganisms to survive in.

Sticking to these three steps significantly cuts the risk of carrying invasive species into a new watershed.
