Gear notes for the Kushiro River Expedition. This one’s about the mobile battery.
Nowhere to Charge Along the Route
This trip runs from Sapporo to Kushiro by plane, Kushiro to Teshikaga by train, then by trail on foot into the source of the Kushiro River at Lake Kussharo. From there it’s a paddle down the Kushiro River to the Pacific, then a flight back from Kushiro to Sapporo — five nights, six days. There’s basically nowhere to charge anything along the way, so everyone brings what they need.
Why 10000mAh Used to Be Enough
Until now, the only mobile battery in the kit was a 10000mAh unit that’s been around for a few years. A 1- or 2-night business trip with a hotel stay means hotel power is available, and packrafting trips by car mean a cigarette lighter socket plus an EcoFlow unit carried in the vehicle. 10000mAh covered it.
No Car, No EcoFlow This Time
This route has no car segment at all — it’s a mix of flying, train, walking, and packraft, with no cigarette socket or EcoFlow to fall back on. Over five nights and six days, enough capacity was needed to charge a smartphone, an electric air pump, and an Insta360, plus the peace of mind of not having to worry about running short. Those two things are the whole reason for moving from 10000mAh to 20000mAh.
What got added is the Anker Power Bank (20000mAh, 87W, Built-In USB-C Cable). The built-in cable was a deciding factor too — it cuts down on the river-trip-specific problem of forgetting or losing a charging cable.
Bringing Both Batteries
In the end, the new 20000mAh unit is coming along with the old 10000mAh one too. Across five nights and six days, running a smartphone, an electric air pump, and an Insta360, the 20000mAh unit by itself did not leave much of a margin. Total capacity works out to 30000mAh, split across two units.
