If your packraft is equipped with a TIZIP cargo fly zipper, regular maintenance is non-negotiable.

TIZIP is an exceptionally high-performance waterproof zipper — but once it fails, repair or replacement comes at significant cost. Just like a drysuit zipper, consistent lubrication and care reduces the stress placed on both the slider and the sealing surfaces, substantially extending the zipper’s service life.

Here’s a straightforward summary of the basic maintenance procedure.

TIZIP Maintenance Steps

① Apply lubricant to the outer surface via cloth — not directly to the zipper teeth. With the zipper fully closed, apply a small amount of dedicated zipper lubricant to a clean cloth, then work it into the urethane-laminated outer surface of the zipper. Never apply lubricant directly to the zipper chain.

② Work the lubricant evenly across the entire closed outer surface. Continue until the full length of the closed zipper exterior is lightly and evenly coated.

③ Wipe away any excess lubricant. Residual lubricant left on the surface will attract sand and debris, which defeats the purpose. Remove all excess with a clean cloth.

④ Open the zipper and apply a thin coat to the chain and sealing edges. Use the cloth to apply a very light layer of lubricant to the zipper chain and both sealing edges.

⑤ Apply a small amount of lubricant to the docking end. A small dab at the insertion point helps the slider engage cleanly.

⑥ Open and close the zipper several times to confirm smooth operation. The zipper should slide freely and close with minimal resistance.

Why This Matters

The TIZIP serves a dual purpose — it provides both waterproofing and an airtight seal. That’s a demanding job for a single component. When the zipper feels stiff, when grit gets into the chain, or when the sealing surfaces show signs of wear — and you continue to force it — the result is accelerated deterioration of the seal face and eventual slider failure.

Three habits to build:

Rinse before and after use. Lubricate regularly. Always close fully before packing or transporting.

Making these part of your post-trip routine will significantly extend the life of your cargo fly zipper — and help you avoid a repair bill that makes maintenance look very cheap in comparison.

The TIZIP is precision equipment. Treat it like a part of your kit, not an afterthought.
