Packraft Inflation: Bag or Electric Pump

There are two main ways to put air into a packraft: the inflation bag that comes standard with most boats, or a handheld electric pump. Each has its own advantages and drawbacks.


The Inflation Bag

The inflation bag is a fabric sack you fill with air, then squeeze and push into the raft’s valve to force the air through. It ships standard with most packrafts.

It takes some practice. Filling the bag, sealing the neck, and timing the push into the valve all have to line up, or the transfer gets inefficient. Once that rhythm is dialed in, though, actual inflation time isn’t much different from an electric pump.

The advantage is reliability first: no battery, no motor, almost nothing that can break. It’s light, and it barely adds to the pack.

The drawback is that inflation demands continuous physical effort. Filling, sealing, and pushing the bag has to be repeated until the raft is full, and there’s no room to handle anything else while it’s happening.

The Electric Pump

A handheld electric pump connects to the valve and does the work once it’s switched on.

The main advantage is hands-free inflation. While the pump runs, there’s time to handle other things — changing clothes, sorting gear, checking the map. It also removes the physical effort altogether.

The drawback is that a dead battery means a dead pump. And with a battery, motor, and circuit board involved, the risk of a mechanical failure never goes to zero. If it stops working in the field, there needs to be a backup plan.

Choosing Between the Two

The inflation bag wins on one point: nothing to break. The electric pump wins on another: free hands during inflation. Rather than settling on one over the other, it makes sense to choose based on trip length, access to charging, and how much room is left in the pack.
