Three differences matter most:
River-centric vs land-and-river design. The Ranger is built around the assumption that you arrive by vehicle and paddle from there. The Mule is built around the assumption that you carry the boat in, paddle, then carry it back out. Both perform well on the water — but only the Mule is designed to remain practical when the approach is entirely on foot.
How load is carried. The Ranger loads wide and open. Its spacious cockpit accommodates large items, passengers, and pets positioned forward. The Mule loads compactly, prioritizing packability for overland movement before and after the water section.
Weight. The Ranger weighs approximately 5.6 kg. The Mule is lighter depending on configuration. On long portages or backcountry approaches, that difference accumulates in the body.
