When you’re paddling a skirted kayak or packraft, where does your throw bag go?
A waist throw bag works well on open boats. With a spray skirt, it’s a different story — the bag sits at the waist where the skirt attaches, restricts movement, and can interfere with wet exits. The River Station Gear PFD Style 45′ Throw Bag addresses this directly: mount it to your PFD instead, and keep your waist clear.

River Station Gear
River Station Gear (RSG) is a whitewater rescue gear brand based in Cañon City, Colorado — on the Arkansas River, one of the most paddled whitewater rivers in the US.
The brand’s concept is simple: stand out. Every product — throw bags, mesh bags, dry bags, accessories — is designed with bold, colorful aesthetics that are immediately visible on the water. All products are tested and manufactured in Colorado by whitewater enthusiasts. RSG has pushed innovation in both waist throw bag systems and dry bag design, and now operates a brick-and-mortar store in Cañon City.
Packraft Hokkaido became RSG’s authorized dealer in Japan through connections in the paddling community.
PFD Style 45′ Throw Bag
Originally a limited-production item, the PFD Style Throw Bag is now a regular production product following strong demand. The updated version removes the front logo patch, adds a piss mark, and updates the cinch structure for improved usability.

Key Features
Velcro attachment to Astral rescue PFDs The defining feature of this bag is its compatibility with Astral PFDs. A velcro attachment system secures the bag to the central vertical strap inside the chest panel — keeping the bag firmly in place during paddling and preventing it from dropping off.
Compatible Astral PFD models:
- Green Jacket (insert directly into the storage slit behind the chest pocket)
- Bowen
- Blue Jacket
- Indus
The right answer for skirted boats For kayaks and packrafts with spray skirts, this bag replaces the waist throw bag entirely. Mount it to the PFD, keep the waist free, and have your throw bag immediately accessible when you need it.
Easy to stuff design The wide, stiff top opening makes repacking quick after a throw. RSG built “easy to stuff” into the design brief — this bag doesn’t fight you when you’re trying to repack in a hurry.
Sub throw bag versatility Works as a secondary throw bag in addition to a primary setup — useful at put-ins, during portages, or anywhere you want a second line available without adding bulk to your waist.
Included rope 45 feet (approx. 13.7m) of 7mm double-braid floating rope. Breaking strength: 1,500 lbs (approx. 680kg).

Important Safety Note
Practice throwing this bag before you need it in a real situation. Know exactly how far the rope reaches and how it behaves when deployed.
The 13.7m rope length is designed for narrow rivers and short-range rescues. For wide rivers or situations where a swimmer may be farther away, carry a longer throw bag as your primary and use this bag as backup.
