“When there’s snow, I go to the mountains. When the snow melts, I go to the river.”

Kazuhiro Ishikawa is an outdoor guide based in Niseko, Hokkaido. In winter he leads backcountry skiing, and when the snow melts, he moves to the rivers — running packraft sessions, river SUP clinics, and river rescue courses for paddlers who want to build real skills, not just float downstream.

About Yukioibito (Snow Chaser)

Yukioibito (雪追い人 — “one who chases snow”) is an outdoor guide service run by Kazuhiro Ishikawa from Niseko, Hokkaido. The name captures a philosophy: snow from the Sea of Japan falls on the Niseko mountains, melts into rivers, and eventually returns to the ocean. Ishikawa-san has followed that cycle through every season, from mountain to river and back again.

Summer River Programs

The river program is built around clinics and practice sessions — not just guided downstream runs. The emphasis is on building technique, safety awareness, and sound judgment.

Current participation requirement: Participants must bring their own packraft or SUP. Rental equipment (dry suit, wetsuit, etc.) is planned for future seasons.

① Packraft Practice Session

Flatwater and gentle current, working from basic boat handling through progressive river skills.

Ideal for paddlers who have been on lakes but want to move into river paddling, or those looking to improve their line selection and river reading.

Practice content:

  • Basic posture and getting in and out of the boat
  • Paddling fundamentals (forward, back, sweep strokes)
  • Eddy catches (entering slack water from current)
  • Ferry glide (crossing current)
  • Line selection using the current
  • Capsize response and re-entry

② River SUP Practice Session

For lake SUP paddlers stepping into river (downriver) paddling. Technique, line reading, and hazard avoidance — the skills that matter most on moving water.

Practice content:

  • Efficient paddle technique
  • Turning
  • River signals and whistle signals
  • Eddy in and out
  • Ferry glide
  • Basic self-rescue on the river

③ River Rescue Clinic

Safety knowledge and response skills for people who are already paddling rivers, or who want to deepen their river activity safely.

Clinic content:

  • Reading river features (eddies, currents, obstacles)
  • River signals and whistle signals
  • Self-rescue (swimming posture, body position, moving with the current)
  • Rope work (throw bag use)
  • Team rescue (situation assessment, role assignment)
  • River safety management (foot entrapment, strainers, etc.)

June through mid-October (2026 season). Sessions may be modified or cancelled due to weather or river conditions. No cancellation fee for guide-initiated cancellations.

What He Prioritizes as a Guide

Four principles underpin Ishikawa-san’s guiding:

  1. Read the weather
  2. Understand the terrain
  3. Identify the risks
  4. Make the call not to push it

“Safety before fun” — this shapes a daily practice of weather analysis, seasonal risk assessment, first aid training, avalanche rescue training, and swift water rescue training.

Who It’s For

  • Packrafters or SUP paddlers with their own equipment who want to develop river skills
  • Paddlers in the Niseko area looking for structured, safety-focused coaching
  • Anyone who wants to learn river rescue fundamentals
  • Small-group travelers who prefer a quieter, more deliberate guiding style
