Rocks Side by Side

A cushion wave builds up on the upstream face of a rock. Hit one sideways and lean upstream, and the upstream tube goes under — that’s what flips the boat.

The fix is a high side: the instant you ride up onto the cushion wave, shift your weight downstream, lean into the rock, and push off with your hands to break free.
