A nonprofit organization for packraft enthusiasts. The mere existence of such an organization shows just how large the packrafting community is in the United States.
For example, there are various ways to use packrafts and different styles of paddling—ranging from river touring as the main activity, to downriver trips on whitewater sections without hiking, to hiking and then paddling down creeks. I believe that as strong horizontal connections are forged based on individual circumstances, the establishment of similar organizations in Japan will also help raise river literacy.
The American Packrafting Association (APA) published the first module of its “Be WaterWise” education series, a four-episode arc running from choosing a first boat through planning a safe river trip.
Episode 11: Boat Selection and Setup
Hosted by Jule Harle of the Alaska Packrafting School, this episode covers matching boat type to water conditions, cargo load, and trip length, along with how to judge whether a self-bailing design is needed. On paddle choice: “shaft length and blade shape matter more than brand name.” It also covers fitting a PFD and helmet correctly.
Episode 12: Pre-Launch Setup
Covers adjusting thigh straps, foot blocks, and back bands. Explains the “paddler’s box” concept, an 85-degree shoulder angle that protects the joints, along with proper paddle grip and integrating the boat with the body.
Episode 13: Maintenance
Hosted by Glenn Murdoch of Blue Duck Packrafts, this episode lays out the basic principle: clean, drain, dry, store. It covers inflation and deflation technique, caring for dry suits and latex gaskets, and repair methods using Aquaseal UV and Tenacious Tape.
Episode 14: Trip Planning
Hosted by Deane Parker, this episode covers choosing a river based on the least experienced member of the group, assessing difficulty and scouting hazards in advance, reading weather and watershed conditions, and sharing emergency contacts and expected return times.
