Shugakuso’s Shiroishi store is hosting a packraft test-ride event on the Shiribetsu River, with the latest models from MRS and BlueNileGear set up for experienced paddlers to try on a real down-river run.
Schedule and Course
The event runs Sunday, August 23, 2026, in two sessions: 8:30–12:00 and 12:30–16:00. Both cover the Shiribetsu River from Nakano Bridge to Yotei Ohashi. Meeting point is the riverbank parking lot upstream of Yotei Ohashi, on the right bank.
Boats on Hand
MRS models like the Split and mini Shark — rarely available to test anywhere in Japan — will be on the water, along with several self-bailing Viking-series and spray-deck boats.
Who Can Join, and How
This one’s for experienced paddlers. Entry requires being able to run a river with some rapids solo; complete beginners aren’t eligible. It’s aimed at packraft owners, river kayakers, and other paddlers with some background.
Cost is ¥3,000 per person, with 6 spots per session. To sign up, contact Shugakuso Shiroishi’s canoe department (011-860-1111, email also accepted) with your name, contact info, age, paddling experience, and any rental gear needed. A chance to swap notes with other participants is built into the finish point.
