Alpacka Raft’s blog put together a rundown of safety skills for coastal packrafting. Written by Cameron Fenton, the post uses the arrival of the new flatwater boats Chinook and Aleutian as an occasion to cover five things paddlers need to know for coastal adventures.

Coastal packrafting demands a different skill set than river safety — reading a nautical chart, understanding tide tables — and that’s what makes it hard. As a former river guide, the sense that rivers and the ocean call for completely different preparation resonates strongly. This is territory worth building up to, not jumping into.

5 Skills You Need on the Coast

  1. Reading a nautical chart: understanding water depth, coastline, and where strong currents run
  2. Understanding tide tables: predicting tide timing and height to judge campsites and put-in/take-out points
  3. Marine weather forecasting: gathering sea-state information, including wind and wave height and speed
  4. VHF radio communication: avoiding collisions with commercial vessels and handling distress calls in an emergency
  5. Rescue technique: practicing skills like the T-rescue and paddle-float rescue

New Boats, and the Need for Experience

While the Chinook and Aleutian are rated as genuinely fun and efficient for coastal adventuring, the author warns that anyone who isn’t a highly experienced sea paddler should stay off open water.
