Gear notes for the Kushiro River 100km Packraft Expedition. This one’s about footwear. The TOPO Terraventure is off the list; the plan now is two pairs, an Astral Rassler 2.0 and a Chaco Rapid Pro.
One Pair of Astral Rassler 2.0, for Both Trail and River
The route includes both trail hiking and river running, but the Astral Rassler 2.0 alone should handle the trail sections just fine. It keeps the protection and grip of a river shoe while holding up to trail use as well.

On Rainy Days, Switching to Chaco, Barefoot
If it rains, the plan is to switch to a Chaco Rapid Pro, worn barefoot. The Rassler 2.0 stays the main shoe, with the Chaco as a weather-dependent swap — that’s the two-pair system.

Why the TOPO Got Cut
This trip has no car segment at all — everything gets carried on foot. The TOPO Terraventure has some bulk to it, and on this kind of trip that bulk just becomes extra weight to haul. Rather than carrying a dedicated trail shoe, letting the Astral Rassler 2.0 cover the trail role too keeps the overall kit lighter.
