Which inner dry bag should you use in your Cargo Fly?
For most packrafting, a roll-top dry bag is the right answer. Lightweight, simple, reliable — the classic roll-top covers the waterproofing and organization needs of the majority of trips.
AlpackaRaft’s roll-top inner dry bags come in three sizes. Here’s how to choose.
The Three Sizes
| Size | Dimensions | Capacity | Compatible models | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | Approx. 22cm × 73cm | 30L | Refuge, Scout, Valkyrie | In stock |
| Standard | Approx. 25cm × 73cm | 34L | All models | In stock |
| XL | Approx. 30cm × 91cm | 64L | Forager, Oryx, Ranger (may be snug in Ranger) | In stock |
Small (30L)
Compatible: Refuge, Scout, Valkyrie
Sized for models with a narrower tube diameter. The Standard won’t sit cleanly in these smaller-tube boats — the Small is the right fit.
Standard (34L)
Compatible: All models
The safe default. Works with Caribou, Expedition, Gnarwhal, Mule, Mage, and every other current AlpackaRaft. Two bags, one per tube side, for balanced weight distribution.
XL (64L)
Compatible: Forager, Oryx, Ranger
For models with a large-volume Cargo Fly. Roughly twice the capacity of the Standard — suited to long expeditions and the Forager’s XL Cargo Fly system. May be a snug fit in the Ranger.
Shared Specifications
All roll-top bags include a quick-release buckle for clipping to the inside of the packraft tube (some older models may not include mounting clips). Sold in a set of two across all sizes.
Packing Tips
- Distribute weight evenly between the two bags — imbalance causes the boat to lean.
- Wrap hard items (pots, stove) in clothing and position them toward the inside and upper portion of the tube — protects the fabric from abrasion in shallow sections.
- Place heavier items lower in the tube to lower the center of gravity.
Roll-Top vs Zipper-Style
| Roll-top | Zipper-style | |
|---|---|---|
| Standard packrafting | ◎ | ○ |
| Big or high water | △ | ◎ (hull rigidity) |
| Multi-chamber permit rivers | × | ◎ (secondary air chamber) |
| Weight priority | ◎ | ○ |
| Content access | Unroll each time | Zipper — fast open/close |
Roll-top covers most scenarios. For big water or permit rivers, see the Zipper-style bag.
