AlpackaRaft Thigh Strap Guide — Choosing Between 2-Point, 3-Point, and 4-Point Systems

Thigh straps change how you paddle a packraft.

With straps, you paddle with your hips and knees as well as your arms. Leaning, edging, rolling — these movements require the boat to move with your body. Without straps, you’re just sitting in it. With straps, you’re wearing it.

AlpackaRaft offers three thigh strap options: 2-point, 3-point, and 4-point. More attachment points means more control — but also more specific requirements for your boat’s hardware. Check your model’s compatibility before ordering.

2-Point Control Strap

The simplest option — ankle and hip attachment only.

Compatible with all AlpackaRaft models that have ankle and hip attachment points. The lightest option, and the right choice if your boat doesn’t have side tube ladder plates, or if you’re new to thigh straps.

Control level is the lowest of the three — but significantly better than paddling without any straps.

DIY installation requires:

3-Point Thigh Strap

Adds a side tube connection to the ankle and hip points — a patented three-point system.

Requires ankle attachment, hip attachment, and a ladder plate on the side tube. Provides better control than the 2-point without requiring the long or double ladder plates needed for the 4-point.

DIY installation requires:

4-Point Thigh Strap

The highest-control option in the AlpackaRaft lineup — a patented four-point system.

Requires ankle, hip, and side long or double ladder plate attachment points. Delivers the most precise boat control for demanding whitewater — leaning, edging, and rolling at Class III+ levels.

Not compatible with (important):

  • Refuge 2024 and later
  • Expedition 2025 and later
  • Gnarwhal

If you have one of these models, choose the 2-point or 3-point system instead.

DIY installation requires:

Decision Tree

Is your boat a Refuge (2024+), Expedition (2025+), or Gnarwhal? → Yes: 4-point is not compatible. Choose 2-point or 3-point.

Does your boat have side tube ladder plates? → Yes: 3-point or 4-point are both options → No: 2-point

Do you want maximum control? → Yes (and your boat is 4-point compatible): 4-point → Weight or cost matters more: 2-point or 3-point
