パックラフトで一度下ってみたかった北海道の玄関口近くの川
北海道の玄関、新千歳空港の横を流れる美々川。日中に飛行機で離着陸する時に見える蛇行している「あの川」です。ダッキー（従来のエア注入方式のカヤック、いわゆるインフレータブル式と言われる艇ですが、パックラフトに比べて生地が厚く重量がある）やカナディアンカヌーで下った経験はありましたが、パックラフトに乗って一度は、訪れてみたかったのです。
というのも、この河川は、流れもかなーり緩く、上流に向かって漕ぎ上がろうと思えば漕ぎ上がれるくらいなのですが、カヌーポートのある松美々橋から、スタートしてすぐは河川も細く、個人的に、大きい舟は似合わない川だと思っていました。（下流になってくると川幅も広くなりカナディアンカヌーツアーも行われていて大きな舟でも最適な区間もあります！）
今回のトリップは、ダウンリバー未経験者２人からお声かけいただいて実現したトリップでしたが、そんな感じで、「パックラフトでダウンリバーしてみたい！」の声にも気軽にお応え出来るようなコミュニティの立ち上げも考えています。その構想とご案内は、またの機会に！
セルフベイラーとデッキカバー付きパックラフトのメリットとデメリット
前回記事で、セルフベイラー艇とデッキカバー付きの艇のそれぞれのメリットについて書きましたが、そのデメリットを感じた今回のトリップでもありました。
今回チョイスしたパックラフトは、日本国内代理店がスター商事さんのマーシャス フロンティアの自動排水穴（瀬の波がコックピット内に入ってきた場合に排水してくれる穴）いわゆるセルフベイラー艇 “ WW-255 “ WWの文字通りホワイトウォーター向けのパックラフトで、このような穏やかな河川でももちろん問題ないのですが、セルフベイラーがついてるという事は、船底から少量の水は入ってきて座っているお尻は濡れてしまうという状況、10月という秋口だった為、気温も低くもちろんドライスーツは着用していたのですが、何時間もお尻が浸かっていると流石に冷えてくるのです。
北海道の場合、真夏のほんの短い期間以外は水温はぼぼ上昇しないので、春、秋（マニアックな冬）の気温の下がり方を考えるとリバーツーリング目的のダウンリバーだとセルフベイラーなしのデッキ付きパックラフトをチョイスするメリットは大きいと思います。
結局のところ、穏やかな川でも結局どんな川でも面白く、ここ美々川は子供の頃に味わう探検のようなパックラフティングを楽しめました。
A river near the entrance of Hokkaido that I wanted to go down once by packraft.
The Mimagawa River runs beside New Chitose Airport, the gateway to Hokkaido. It is “that river” that meanders through the city, visible when airplanes take off and land during the day. I had already been down there with a ducky (a conventional air-inflated kayak, so called inflatable type, but with thicker fabric and heavier than a packraft) and a Canadian canoe, but I wanted to visit the river at least once with a packraft.
The current of this river is quite slow, and you can paddle upstream if you want to, but the river is narrow right from the Matsumizubashi Bridge where the canoe port is located, and I personally thought it was not suitable for a big boat. (Downstream, the river becomes wider and there are sections where Canadian canoe tours are held, making it suitable for large boats!)
) This trip was made possible by two people who had no experience on the downriver, and we were happy to respond to their requests to downriver in a packraft. We are also planning to start a community where we can easily respond to those who want to try downrivering with packraft. We will let you know the details of this plan and how to get involved in it!
Advantages and disadvantages of self-bailers and deck-covered packraft
In my previous article, I wrote about the advantages of self-bailer boats and boats with deck covers, but this trip also made me feel their disadvantages.
The packraft we chose this time was a so-called self-bailer boat with an automatic drainage hole (a hole that drains the waves of the rapids if they enter the cockpit) of Marshalls Frontier, whose Japanese domestic distributor is Star Trading Corporation “ WW 255 ” WW literally means It is a packraft for white water, and of course it can be used in calm rivers like this, but the fact that it has a self-bailer means that a small amount of water comes in through the bottom of the boat, and your bottom will get wet. Of course, I was wearing a dry suit, but after being in the water for several hours, it was getting cold.
In Hokkaido, the water temperature does not rise except for a short period in midsummer, so considering the way the temperature drops in spring and fall (maniacal winter), I think there is a great merit in choosing a decked packraft without a self-bailer when you are downriver for river touring purposes.
After all, any river, even a calm one, is interesting after all, and here on the Bizugawa River, I enjoyed pack rafting like the exploration I enjoyed as a child.
