Alpacka Raft’s blog featured a month-long trip on Lake Powell and the Colorado River by Diana and Brett Davis in October 2025. Starting from North Wash, at the head of Cataract Canyon, the couple covered 150 miles, exploring 33 side canyons across the Escalante and San Juan River drainages.
Chinook as a Way of Getting Around
The boat was an Alpacka Chinook. It let them cover 1 to 2 miles per hour faster than usual, with enough room to carry a month’s worth of food and camp gear.
The Contrast Between Quiet and Noise
The post describes a place quiet enough to hear a bird’s wingbeats. On the main channel, jet skis and motorboats dominate the soundscape, but a mile or more up a side canyon, silence takes over. Unlike the main channel, where graffiti and trash are common, the side canyons held nothing but traces of Native American history. That contrast — a public area ruled by motorized recreation and noise, against untouched wilderness reachable only by human-powered paddlers — is the heart of this trip.
