Denver-based blog Understaffed Packraft published a post introducing its second expedition to Mexico’s Veracruz state. The author first packrafted in Mexico back in 2024, on the Río La Venta — this trip comes roughly two years later.
This introductory post makes clear that the earlier film Jalco Flow and the Veracruz gear list were both groundwork for this expedition. Reading the series in order makes the shape of the whole trip much easier to follow.
A Different Scale Than Last Time
Where the previous trip was a small group, this one grew into a large expedition with around 30 paddlers and local Mexican guides. It’s run as an official ecotour by the guide organization Packraft Mexico, and includes a biodiversity survey component.
Two Rivers to Paddle
The main rivers are the Rio Antigua and Rio Pescados, rated Class II to III with a few sections IV and above, and the Rio Actopan, a clear limestone-country river rated Class II to III. Last time, high humidity degraded and soured the synthetic layers, so this trip adds a neoprene layer and prioritizes wool clothing over synthetics for its durability.
