A First-Timer’s Bikerafting Trip — 3 Days on the Lower Deschutes

Alpacka Raft’s blog featured Chris Wilson’s account of his first bikerafting trip. He and his friend Rob spent three days on Oregon’s Lower Deschutes River. Wilson had some light Class II experience on a stand-up paddleboard, but bikerafting itself was new to him.

What makes this one good is that it includes the mistakes — like inflating the raft on day one before remembering to take the pedals off. A “first time” account like this, failures included, tends to be more useful to the next reader than a story where everything goes right.

Day 1: Riding to the River

The pair covered 17 miles along the Deschutes River Trail, the surface deteriorating fast, detouring around the remains of an old rail trestle before setting up camp.

Day 2: Getting on the Water, Mistakes Included

They floated 17 miles, having forgotten to remove the pedals before inflating the raft, and put in practice time on Class I and II rapids.

Day 3: Real Rapids, and a Capsize

In the Class III sections at Colorado Rapid and Rattlesnake Rapid, both of them capsized. They kept paddling anyway, smiling, and finished the trip already talking about the next bikerafting plan.
