パックラフトの信頼性と進化について
従来のインフレータブル式（エア注入式）のカヤックに比べると格段に持ち運びやすくなったパックラフト。生地が薄いということで、以前から川を下っていた方々からすると、穴開かない？壊れない？という声が多く聞こえてきたのも事実です。（私も最初は懐疑的でした！）
実際にパックラフトを所有してみて、多くのリバートリップに使ってみての感想は「全然問題なし！」もちろん、突き刺した時の強度を比べると、生地厚がインフレータブル式は0.7mm～1.8mm厚に対してパックラフトの210dは0.4mmほどなので、強度に違いが出てくるのも事実です。でも、比べれば！です。
生地が厚かろうが、薄かろうが、鉄筋に引っ掛ければ破れますし、穴も開きます。
しかし、その生地の薄さ故に、パッキンングして持ち運びしやすい故に、川＋αの組み合わせの楽しみ方がしやすい。艇本体が軽いということは喫水が浅いので、操船感覚も掴みやすい（初めて操船する人でも直感的に動かすイメージ理解しやすい！）など、メリットは大きいように思います。
アルパカラフトがパックラフトというカテゴリーを製品化してから20年以上経過しているので、当初のパックラフトよりも格段に性能が上がりました。最初は、本当におもちゃのようなゴムボートだったので、フリップ（艇が引っくり返ること）も良くしたことでしょう。（Alpackaraftの公式youtube動画 ” Sheri ” の16:18あたりが初期のパックラフト）どこまで傾けたら引っくり返るかわかりにくかった、チューブ式のボートが、今やカヤックの様にリーニング、エッジングしながら操船できるくらいになっています。
よりビッグウォーターのホワイトウォーターに対応できるようになってきているということは、パックラフト業界にとっては喜ばしい出来事だと思います。ローウォーターのツーリングでもハイスペックであれば、操船が楽になるということです。（リバーランニングに重きを置いた艇だと荷物を積んだりしにくいという話しは、ひとまず置いて置いて、進む方向は間違っていないと思います！何事も突き抜けてから良い塩梅を探せば良いのですから。）

冒頭のアイキャッチ画像は、羊蹄山麓、ニセコエリアの尻別川です。良い感じに波が立つ水量だったのです。気温も良し天気も良し、幸せな気分で終えたダウンリバーでした。
The Reliability and Evolution of Packraft.
Compared to conventional inflatable (air-inflated) kayaks, packrafts are much easier to carry. The thin fabric means that people who have been rafting rivers for a long time may wonder if the kayak will not have holes? Won’t it break? (I was skeptical at first!). (I was skeptical at first too!)
After actually owning a packraft and using it on many river trips, my impression was, “No problem at all!” Of course, it is true that when you compare the strength when pierced, there is a difference in strength because the fabric thickness is about 0.4mm for Packraft’s 210d while the inflatable type is 0.7mm to 1.8mm thick. But if compared! It is true that there is a difference in strength between the two.
Whether the fabric is thick or thin, if it is caught on a rebar, it will tear and a hole will open.
However, because of the thinness of the fabric, it is easy to pack and carry, making it easy to enjoy the combination of river + α. The light weight of the boat means that the draft is shallow, so it is easy to get a feel for the operation of the boat (even first-time boaters can intuitively understand the image of the boat in motion!) ).
It has been more than 20 years since AlpackaRafts commercialized the packraft category, so the performance has improved significantly over the original packraft. At first, they were really toy-like rubber boats and would have done flips (boats flipping over) well. (The official Alpackaraft youtube video “Sheri” shows the early packraft at around 16:18.) It was hard to know how far to lean the boat to make it flip over, but now it is possible to steer it while edging and leaning it like a kayak.
This means that we are becoming more big-water and white-water ready, which is a welcome development for the packraft industry. It means that even low water touring will be easier to maneuver if the boat is high spec. (I think we are going in the right direction, putting aside for the moment the talk that it is difficult to carry luggage on a boat that is focused on river running! You just have to find the right balance after you get through everything.)
