The More You Use It, the Clearer Your Ideal Setup Becomes

One of the genuinely appealing things about packrafts is the ability to customize them. Here’s a look at one practical upgrade I made to my own setup.

On the bow-side floor — essentially the foot area — I added an aftermarket grab loop from Alpacka Raft using a DIY installation. For attaching it, Gear Aid Aquaseal+FD is the recommended adhesive.

My packraft, the Alpacka Raft Classic, does not come with a foot brace as standard equipment. (As of 2023, foot braces were included as standard on Alpacka’s whitewater models: the Wolverine and the Gnarwhal.)

In my setup, I store repair kits and other items I rarely need in a dry bag, which I place at my feet as a makeshift foot brace. The problem with simply leaving it there is that in the event of a flip, that dry bag could wash away. By adding a DIY grab loop and clipping the dry bag to it with a small carabiner, everything stays in place even if things go sideways.

Add-On Parts That Help You Build Your Ideal Packraft

Alpacka Raft offers a range of aftermarket attachment parts to help you tailor your boat to your specific needs:

Grab Loop — The versatile all-purpose attachment point I installed in this build. Useful any time you need to secure something to the boat.

Strap Plate

Strap Plate — Allows you to thread Voile straps or Titan straps through, making it easy to lash bicycle frames, rod cases, and other gear to the packraft.

Carrying Handle

Carrying Handle — Makes transporting the packraft significantly easier when it’s inflated or packed.

Single D-Ring

Single D-Ring Plate — A metal D-ring offering a stronger attachment point than a standard grab loop.

The ability to take a finished product and customize it to match your specific use case — that’s one of the real strengths of packrafts.

A note on installation: Additional tie-down points are an excellent way to customize your boat for specialized packing setups — securing a bicycle, adding a stern safety line, or creating custom rigging options. These are DIY parts; installation instructions are not included. Some prior experience with permanently attaching components to a packraft is recommended. Take time to think carefully about the best placement and installation method before committing.

Aquaseal+FD is the ideal adhesive for installing additional tie-down points.
