The American Packrafting Association (APA) published a three-part series as part of its “Be WaterWise” education program, covering boat handling fundamentals through river rescue technique.

Episode 15: Boat Handling Fundamentals

The forward stroke relies on full arm extension, a vertical paddle shaft, and torso rotation to generate power. Steering strokes, the sweep stroke and stern rudder, control direction. A low brace holds stability; a high brace prevents capsize.

APA sums up the episode with a simple rule: forward stroke drives, steering stroke guides.

Episode 16: Rescue Skills

Topics include the wet exit, getting clear of a capsized boat quickly and safely, buddy rescue for bringing a swimmer back to a boat, throw bag technique for securing a swimmer from shore, and communication and teamwork under pressure.

Episode 17: Edging and Ferry Gliding

This episode covers balance while tilting the boat with a stable core, entering and exiting eddies behind rocks, and ferry gliding to cross a river without being swept downstream. APA’s takeaway: tilt, don’t paddle harder.
