PNW-based blog Cynthia & Tex published a 3-day backpacking guide to the West Fork Foss Trail, in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness about two hours east of Seattle. Access is off Highway 2, through the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

One line stood out: looking at a lake from shore and actually paddling out onto it are completely different experiences. Working a packraft in as a day-trip detour is an idea that translates directly to lake-hopping in Japan’s alpine areas too.

The 3-Day Route

Day one runs from the trailhead to Trout Lake, about 1.6 miles, then on to Lake Malachite, another 3.2 miles. Day two covers the roughly 1.7 miles from Malachite to Little Heart Lake. Day three descends the 6.5 miles back to the trailhead. The full loop covers about 15 miles round trip with roughly 3,300 feet of cumulative elevation gain, rated “hard.”

Paddling Big Heart Lake by Packraft

The author brought along a Kokopelli Hornet Lite packraft and used it on a day trip from the Little Heart Lake camp out to Big Heart Lake. The route climbs through five lakes in sequence — Trout, Malachite, Copper, Little Heart, and Big Heart — with the quiet deepening the further in you go.
