The American Packrafting Association (APA) published the third module of its “Be WaterWise” education series, covering self-rescue, reading environmental hazards, and group decision-making. Episode 18 is taught by filmmaker and paddling instructor Deane Parker.

Episode 18: Self Rescue It

Covers the wet exit during a capsize, re-entry technique from the water, effective throw bag use, and buddy rescue coordination.

Episode 19: Read It

Covers reading strainers and downed trees, hidden shallows and rocks, and hydraulic features like pillow waves, undercuts, and holes. Also covers cold-water risk assessment, responding to high wind, storms, and flash floods, and using eddies and crosscurrents to move safely.

Episode 20: Wise It

Covers group dynamics: checking skill levels before setting out, building communication under pressure, distinguishing experience from judgment, creating a culture where concerns can be raised, assigning emergency roles in advance, and debriefing after each trip.
